Piping Inspection

Piping services article, alongside the other linked articles are useful for Construction Contractors Quality Control Personnel, Second and Third Party Inspectors, Purchasers, Sellers, Plant Inspectors, HSE Engineers, Integrity Engineers, Operation and Maintenance Engineers, and any Other Interested Individuals.

The title of the code is Piping Inspection Code: In-service Inspection, Rating, Repair, and Alteration of Piping Systems.

• Creating a piping inventory list indicating the line number, pipe specification class, rating, schedule, pipe origin location (from) and pipe destination location (to)
• Selecting appropriate NDT techniques for each piping circuit based on the circuit damage mechanism or during Operation (Leaking location & Repairing procedures)
• Determination of piping service class based consequence of failure and instruction stated in API 570 or based on the Risk Based Inspection method.
• Carry out external inspection for corrosion, leaks, previous temporary repairs, clamps, coating breakdown, insulation damage, vibration, misalignment, pipe support deterioration specifically in touch points and to air to soil interface, pipe hanger distortion or breakage and frizz damage
• External thickness measurement on CMLs on each piping circuit
• Corrosion rate calculation based on metal loss in a specific time interval
• Retirement thickness calculation based on the minimum required thickness and minimum required structural thickness
• Remaining life calculation based on the available thickness for corrosion and the corrosion rate value
• Determination of piping circuit inspection interval based remaining life calculation and piping service class
• Determination of piping inspection interval for non-thinning damage mechanism
• Making supplementary inspection with the proper NDE method for piping circuits susceptible to creep cracking

Application of other NDE methods if it is necessary:

• MT (magnetic particle), WFMT (wet fluorescent magnetic particle), PT (penetrate testing), EC (eddy current), UT shear wave, AUT (automated UT), TOFD (time of flight diffraction), RT, ACFM (alternating current field measurement), AET (acoustic emission) for investigating cracking
• Internal inspection in opened flanges for deposition, corrosion, localized corrosion, erosion, etc.
• Internal inspection of clad or lined piping for disbanding, bulging and cracking
• Internal inspection of refractory lined piping for erosion, deterioration of anchors, undercutting of refractory and coke build up behind refractory
• Flange joint inspection for distortion and leakage and flange face inspection, ring groove and gasket for corrosion, erosion, cracking and mechanical damage
• Internal inspection of dismantled valve for corrosion, erosion, mechanical damage and cracking
• Specific attention and internal inspection of critical check valves
• Inspection of injection points for localized corrosion
• Inspection of dead legs for corrosion
• Making appropriate reporting and report keeping and implement proper system for quick access to the records

Boiler Inspection

We can inspect two heads, Shell & Tubes (Bundles) of Shell and Tube Heat Exchangers

Also we can inspect Plates of Plate Heat exchange

• Thickness measurement and making corrosion rate and remaining life calculation

Tube Bundle:

• Taking care in the pulling out of tube bundle to avoid any mechanical damage
• Sampling from tube side fouling and corrosion products and making lab analysis and making interpretation by corrosion engineer (if necessary)
• Controlling of water jetting or lancing cleaning process
• Controlling wire brushing process of inner tube edge and rolling area (preparation for ID measurement)
• Inside diameter measurement in tubes and tubes rolling areas
• Rate off and accordingly plugging the tubes when their OD reaches to the ID plus one thickness
• Re-tubing of tube bundle if more than 10% of tubes reach the above rejection limit
• Inspection from tube bundle components such as tube's sheet, tube, tie rods and spacers, transfer baffles or support plate, impingement baffle, floating head flange and floating head backing device
• Inspection from internal surface of tubes for corrosion and fouling
• Pulling out a sample tube for sectioning and corrosion analysis if necessary
• Re-tubing when sectioning result proves the thickness is half of the nominal value
• Visual inspection and dye penetration test from tube to tube's sheet seal or strength weld
• Eddy current testing if it is necessary

Channel in Heat Exchanger Inspection:

• Thickness measurement and making corrosion rate and remaining life calculation
• Inspection of gasket seating area, pass partition and nubbing for corrosion and deformation
• Inspection of internal surface for fouling, corrosion and soundness of linings (if any)
• Balance hole inspection for corrosion and erosion
• Welding joints inspection for any possible cracks
• Reinforcement pad inspection and doing soap test if necessary
• Cathodic protection anodes inspection and replacement if necessary
• Diaphragm and division box visual inspection and dye penetration test of diaphragm for any possible cracks (for high pressure exchangers)

Expansion Joint Inspection:

The heat exchangers with expansion joints need to be inspected to maintain their reliability for:

• Flange inspections for corrosion and erosion
• Inspection from internal surface for corrosion and erosion
• Air test

The tube and shell hydrostatic test need to be done after the above stated inspection activities.

Pressure Vessel Inspection
